NEWS: City fencers make their point at South West event

PLYMOUTH Fencing club dominated the latest round of the Leon Junior Series epée competition with their young blades securing the lion's share of the medals.

The Stonehouse-based club won four golds, four silvers and seven bronze medals at the event hosted by themselves and staged at Plymouth College.

The Leon Paul is a nationwide series running throughout the year and at October's event, Plymouth Fencing were definitely a cut above the rest in winning 50 per cent of the medals up for grabs.

Plymouth Fencing club coach Andy Hill had every reason to be proud of his team's bountiful efforts and results, and their returns which he put into context.

"There were over 20 different schools and clubs in the competition, with the nearest medal haul to ours being two from Sheffield and two from mid-Wales," said Hill.

"So to come away with that number of medals with so many clubs competing was fantastic."

Plymouth's list of gold winners began at under-nine when Emma Andrews, who attends Wembury school and Benjamin Andrews, of Kings, topped the podium.

At U11 level, Tia Simms Lymn of Plymouth College and Hyde Park school's Josh Hellings also won their class and category.

A silver medal was claimed at U11 by Brendan Marsh of Hyde Park, while at U13 Plymouth College students Catherine Bishop and Tim Andrews both came away with silvers – as did Plymouth High School for Girls' Kelcey Pillage, who won silver in the U15 category.

Leading the bronze brigade were U9 duo Theo Wrigley of Wembury School and Hyde Park's Josh Lake, while Alice Simmonds of Plymouth College finished third at U11.

Plymouth's roll call continued at U13 with Devonport High School for Boys' Josh Wrigley winning bronze, as did U15 student Madeline Bond of Devonport High School for Girls, and Amira Conley-Conversi of Plymouth High for Girls and Tom Weatherby of Devonport High School for Boys.
